Solar-wind hybrid water pumping (GEF Small Grants Program) Installation of wind measurement equipment on 20m tower Reliable wind resource data is extremely difficult to find for Mali, as well as for many other West African countries. This is a major barrier to wind energy develoment in Mali. It is well known that mechanical windpumps were used successfully a great deal during the colonial period, but wind technology in Mali today is poorly known. Therefore it was important to take some reliable wind data in the frame of this project. A 20m tower was used (the wind turbine will also be on a 20m tower), and data is collected using three sensors: an anemometer (wind speed); a wind vane (wind direction); and a pyranometer (to measure sunshine).
