President: Mrs Naciré Nana HAIDARA, Technical Advisor for the Environment to the President of the Republic,
Vice-President: Mr Mama KONATE, National Director of Meteorology, focussing on climate change,
Permanent Secretary: Abdou MAIGA, Scientific Co-ordinator, IER.
2002-5 Implementation in Mali of the project: Support for the Adaptation of CILSS [Comité Inter-Etat pour la lutte contre la Secheresse dans le Sahel] Countries to Climate Change.
Project objective: To reduce the vulnerability of people in the Sahel region to the harmful effects of climate change.
The project is carried out as follows:
- collecting of socio-economic and environmental data
- drawing up climate change scenarios
- implementing pilot projects in three countries: Burkina, Mali and Niger.
The expected results are :
- Socio-economic and environmental data
- Evaluation of the impact of climate change and of the strategies of adaptation to reduce the vulnerability of those in the pilot zones.
The project is being financed by the Government of Canada and it is based at the AGRHYMET Regional Centre of Niamey.
30 August 2003 Launching of the pilot project by the Minister for Food Security.
January 2004 Study in 10 test villages for community particiipation for implementation UNDP/GEF component of the HEURA (Household Energy & Universal Rural Access)
The ceremony took place in the conference room of the Sahel Institute, was presided over by the Minister for Food Security and was attended by the Canadian Ambassador, the Secretaries-General of the Ministries for Agriculture and for the Environment as well as the project’s National Directors and representatives of different centres for the project.
