1995 – Inventories made of greenhouse gases in Mali.
1999 – Studies carried out examining the vulnerability and possible adaptation of the agricultural sector to climate change.
1999 – Initial National Study on climate change.
1999 – Presentation workshop on the results of the vulnerability/adaptation study (see above).
2000 – Training of technical personnel in the use of the MAGGIC, SCENGEN and DSSAT models.
2002 – CILSS workshop on climate change organised in Bamako.
1999-2003 – Drawing up of climate change scenarios for Mali.
1999-2003 – Studies carried out examining the vulnerability and adaptation of corn and cotton to climate change in Mali.
2002-2003 – Implementation of rehabilitation activities.
July 2003 – Workshop bringing together the different studies examining the vulnerability and adaptation of different areas to climate change in Mali.
May 2003 – Drawing up of the project documents for the study: Capacity Building for the Improvement of Greenhouse Gas Inventories in West Africa (Mali).
June 2003 – Drawing up of the project document for the National Plan of Action for the Adaptation to Climate Change in Mali (PANA).
April 2003 – Workshop on water, climate change and desertification in West Africa with UICN.
June 2003 – Awareness-raising workshop for decision-makers in the private and industrial sectors and NGOs about the agreements and conventions.
June 2003 – Workshop on the national evaluation of capacities to be reinforced for the management of the world environment (ANCR).
July 2003 – Awareness-raising workshop for regional directors about the agreements and conventions.
July 2003 – Information and awareness-raising workshop for decision-makers, the public and NGOs on the United Nations Convention on Climate Change.
7 August 2003 – Establishment of the Mali Carbon Committee, with 26 members and an office for three committee members:
President: Mrs Naciré Nana HAIDARA, Technical Advisor for the Environment to the President of the Republic,
Vice-President: Mr Mama KONATE, National Director of Meteorology, focussing on climate change,
Permanent Secretary: Abdou MAIGA, Scientific Co-ordinator, IER.
2002-5 – Implementation in Mali of the project: Support for the Adaptation of CILSS [Comité Inter-Etat pour la lutte contre la Secheresse dans le Sahel] Countries to Climate Change.
Project objective: To reduce the vulnerability of people in the Sahel region to the harmful effects of climate change.
The project is carried out as follows:
- collecting of socio-economic and environmental data
- drawing up climate change scenarios
- implementing pilot projects in three countries: Burkina, Mali and Niger.
The expected results are :
- Socio-economic and environmental data
- Evaluation of the impact of climate change and of the strategies of adaptation to reduce the vulnerability of those in the pilot zones.
The project is being financed by the Government of Canada and it is based at the AGRHYMET Regional Centre of Niamey.
30 August 2003 – Launching of the pilot project by the Minister for Food Security.
January 2004 – Study in 10 test villages for community particiipation for implementation UNDP/GEF component of the HEURA (Household Energy & Universal Rural Access)
The ceremony took place in the conference room of the Sahel Institute, was presided over by the Minister for Food Security and was attended by the Canadian Ambassador, the Secretaries-General of the Ministries for Agriculture and for the Environment as well as the project’s National Directors and representatives of different centres for the project.
23-25 Feb 2005 – African Development Bank FINESSE consultative workshop, attended by Dr Ibrahim Togola, Mali-Folkecenter.
